Are you a blogger and want to provide your readers with information that goes beyond the next best thing Google finds for you? Then the EEXCESS plug-in for WordPress could be the right tool for you.

Installation procedure

The plug-in is tailored for the WordPress content Management System. Having access to a running WordPress environment is a prerequisite for using the EEXCESS WordPress Plugin. There are three ways to install the WordPress plugin:

From your WordPress dashboard:

  1. Visit ‘Plugins > Add New’
  2. Search for ‘EEXCESS’
  3. Activate EEXCESS from your Plugins page.
  4. You will see EEXCESS in the top left corner of the editor. Click for recommendations.

From WordPress.org:

  1. Download the EEXCESS WordPress Plugin from https://wordpress.org/plugins/eexcess/.
  2. Upload the whole ‘EEXCESS’ directory to ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory, using your preferred method (ftp, sftp, scp, etc…)
  3. Activate EEXCESS from your Plugins page.
  4. You will see EEXCESS in the top left corner of the editor. Click for recommendations.

Download from Github:

  1. Download the EEXCESS WordPress plugin from https://github.com/EEXCESS/wordpress-plugin.
  2. Upload the whole ‘EEXCESS’ directory to ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory, using your preferred method (ftp, sftp, scp, etc…)
  3. Activate EEXCESS from your Plugins page.
  4. You will see EEXCESS in the top left corner of the editor. Click for recommendations.

Guided Tour

To start with the WordPress EEXCESS Plugin follow these steps (click on the screenshots to enlarge them):

  1. Activate the plugin on your WordPress plugin page and you will see the EEXCESS buttons in the top right corner of the WordPress default toolbar       feature_buttons
  2. Inside the text editor you can get recommendations by selecting the text and clicking the “Get Recommendations” button in the editor toolbar or by pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL+E. Get_Recommendations
  3. A result list thematically clustered into the categories Media, Cultural, Scholarly and All (default) is positioned beneath the text editor. A thumbnail for the recommendation is provided during a mouse over. For getting full details about the recommendations the user can click on the individual result item and a new page from the corresponding content provider will open in a separate window.

  4. If users wish to insert or link to one of the recommended multimedia resources, they can position their cursor at the position where they want the reference to appear. Then they optionally select their preferred citation style  and click any of the Citation_Buttons buttons (insert image, insert citation, insert link) of the corresponding recommendation.

  5. If users wish to link to or reference one of the recommended scholarly resources, they must position their cursor where they want the reference to appear. Then optionally select their preferred citation style from the drop down list and press any of the Citation_Buttons buttons of the corresponding recommendation reference.

  6. To delete or alter the referenced text item click on the cross button provided in the WordPress toolbar.

  7. After the appearance of the recommendation result list, a Visualization Dashboard feature is provided for filtering the recommendations on the basis of various facets. Users can activate this feature by clicking this Visualization_Button visualization button and can also reference to the item by clicking the link button.
