ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics is the world’s largest specialist library for economics, with more than four million publications in printed or electronic format and subscriptions to 26,000 periodicals and journals. It is among the leading Information Centres for developing and applying semantic technologies and Web 2.0 technologies for innovative information services – among others EconBiz, a single point of access to the world’s economics literature and information, and EconStor, an Open Access publishing platform for German researchers in economics.
Scholarly working habits are changing rapidly these days. Researchers increasingly communicate and cooperate on the internet, using wikis, blogs, and social networks to share their ideas and findings online. Also, research becomes more interdisciplinary. Consequently, scientific information provision has to change as well. The scholarly library of the future will use the numerous possibilities of the social and semantic Web in order to provide researchers with (relevant) literature right at their point-of-need. We at ZBW want to take an active part in this development, instead of merely watching it passively. Hence, we seize the opportunity to further pursue our research activities within ventures like the research network Science 2.0 or EEXCESS.
Within EEXCESS, ZBW is primarily concerned with the design of linked and multidisciplinary information landscapes and with the technical integration of EconBiz into these environments. The economics research portal will be used for enriching social media channels, blog tools and other online services, thus improving the general public’s access to scientific publications. On the other hand, EconBiz itself could be enhanced by integrating cultural and educational content, permitting scientists and students a broader vision of their research fields.
As lead partner for the dissemination activities, we also ensure that EEXCESS’ research findings become part of the public debate and find sustained use.
We are excited to be part of this adventure and very much looking forward to the next 36 months.
