From 15 to 17 may 2013, the EEXCESS partners met at ZBW in Hamburg. After the kick-off in Graz, this was the first meeting of all partners to discuss and analyse the details of the scenarios that are to be realised in year one of the project. On day one the test bed partners ZBW, Mendeley, Archäologie und Museum Baselland, Collections Trust, Wissenmedia and BitMedia presented their systems and products as well as the data and information relevant to the other project partners. Also, the great number of possible scenarios for recommendation systems has been reduced to a number of favourite scenarios that can be dealt with during the first year.
Apart from discussing the different work packages in detail, another important part of day two was the “Speed Dating” of work packages and test bed partners to discuss questions important to any combination of different work packages and tasks. At first, there was some hesitation and reluctance, possibly due to a lack of speed dating experience, but also because many people were unsure if it was possible to discuss a multitude of different questions and options with multiple partners in timeslots of only 20 minutes. In the end, however, the discussions were extremely fruitful and beneficial to everyone, and at least one colleague publicly admitted that this was her first speed dating but it might not be the last. The last half day focused on general issues like the prospects of dissemination and exploitation as well as project management issues.
At night, the thunder storms and pouring rains did not stop the partners’ plans to meet in local restaurants and other locations and exchange views on legislation and hot topics in different European countries. A great number of languages and dialects was spoken, some slang phrases added to individual vocabularies and one Hamburg native led a great part of the delegation to experience some parts of the Schanzenviertel.
The farewell on Friday was filled with some last minute exchange of ideas and lively discussions that will proceed via Skype conferences and during the next meeting in September.
